China has emerged as a major world power. The country has radically changed since Mao’s time. This programme presents the country’s rapid transformation: It includes five parts:

1. The basics: the country’s geography and rich heritage.

2. From Mao to “the opening”: the communist revolution, then the move to a market economy under Deng’s influence.

3. The Chinese population: 1.3 billion inhabitants; population control through the one-child policy.

4. Rapid urbanisation: the massrural exodus, the transformation of cities.

5. Workshop of the world: “Made in China” toys, textiles and elecronics dominating world markets.
